A long-time practitioner for Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel, Pompon renewed the art of animal sculptors in the early 20th century with his minimalist style. He simplified shapes and smoothed surfaces to remove the frills. In 1922, the artist had an amazing success with his life-size white bear exhibited at the Salon d’Automne. This powerful graceful bear, on show at the Musée d’Orsay since 1986, has, over the years, become one of the world’s most popular sculptures. Re-issued by Baccarat, it is a true demonstration of the exceptional expertise of the House’s artisans.
